The Alliance Française de Newport commemorates the arrival of French Troops in Newport in 1780 with a reenactment of the landing

The Alliance Française de Newport and the Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary National Historic Trail will hold a special ceremony  on  Saturday, July 9, 2022 at 4:30 p.m. at the Rochambeau Monument in King Park at 125 Wellington Avenue in Newport.

This event will commemorate the landing of 6,000 French troops under the command of Comte de Rochambeau on July 13, 1780. The French troops provided critical support to General George Washington’s Continental Army, leading to victory at Yorktown and American independence.

The  58-foot Tall Ship, Tree of Life, under the command of Captain Paul E. Morse, will land costumed reenactors in period-style uniforms.

This event, which is part of The French in Living History Weekend, is free and open to the public.

The Alliance Française de Newport is affiliated with the Fédération des Alliances Françaises which has nearly 1,500 Chapters in 138 countries worldwide. The organization is dedicated to the study of the French language and to promoting cultural exchange.
