What:   “American Samurai in France: Japanese Americans Liberate Bruyères-en-Vosges, October, 1944”

                  Presented by Dr. James T. McIlwain, Professor Emeritus of Neuroscience, Brown University.

                 This is the story of the U.S. 442 Regimental Combat Team composed largely of Japanese-Americans who liberated villages in the Vosges region of France during World War II.

What: Movie Afternoon with The Alliance Française of Newport

             We will be viewing the 2008 hilarious comedy, “Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis”–“Welcome to the Sticks.” The film will be in French with English subtitles. The film is one of the most popular films ever produced in France.

            This French Comedy, directed by Dany Boon and starring Kad Merad, Dany Boon and Zoe Felix, follows the adventures of Philippe and his wife as they deal with a failed job transfer to the French Riviera and end up in a small town in northern France and details their culture shock.

What: Celebration of the Two Year Anniversary of the Alliance Française of Newport’s Saturday Conversation Groups!

The Alliance Française of Newport will celebrate the second year of its Saturday morning Conversation Groups by offering free coffee and French pastries at its weekly Saturday meeting!

The Alliance Française of Newport is affiliated with the Fédération des Alliances Françaises which has nearly 1,500 Chapters in 138 countries worldwide. The organization is dedicated to the study of the French language and to promoting cultural exchange. The Newport Chapter has 145 members. According to Alliance Francaise Treasurer, Smidgie Reid, “Francophiles of all levels ranging from beginners to native speakers gather on Saturday mornings to enjoy coffee and pastries made by a 5th generation French baker/pastry chef. Just hearing French words spoken awakens rusty high school French and gives you the courage to try a few words. Please join us for this Celebration.”

This Saturday morning “drop in” Conversation Group welcomes everyone in a relaxed setting and provides an opportunity for those who love all things French to speak French at all levels!

September 11, 2018 — Classes are now full for fall semester

Fall Semester French Classes Begin!

The Alliance Française of Newport is offering two levels of French language classes beginning September 11, 2018.  There will be a Beginner Course and an Intermediate Course. Classes will be held on Tuesdays through December, 2018 at Salve Regina University and are being taught by a Salve Regina University Professor.

The fee for participants who are Alliance members is $55.

The fee for non-members is $100.

Space is limited, and class registration is on a first-come, first served basis. Payment is necessary before classes begin.

What: Wine Tasting- Find a Great Bottle of French wine for under $25!

Bellevue Wine & Spirits owner, John Callaghan, will provide 4 red and 4 white wines and will talk about the various wine growing regions in France. Wines will be paired with an assortment of delicious cheeses from the Aquidneck Meat Market. Bellevue Wine & Spirits will be offering AFN members a 10% discount on bottles of wine and a 15% discount on a case for future purchases.
